Danny Weidler positioning as SBW ally
July 28, 2007
Channel 9 headline breaker Danny Weidler seems to be positioning himself as an ‘ally’ of Sonny Bill Williams.
After the Kings Cross ‘Hugo’s’ nightclub saga involving Sonny Bill Williams and a freelancer photographer taking pictures of Sonny as he left – Danny Weidler was quick off the mark to break the story and turn it into the big headline it was.
After previously struggling with Bulldogs relations, Danny Weidler has now been in damage control. Giving Bulldogs CEO Malcom Noad a right of reply on the SBW / Photographer saga and now writing several stories about Sonny Bill and his fear of the spotlight. (Suggesting Sonny Bill Williams may return home to NZ and quit NRL)
A pretty amazing turnaround for a journalist that was only 1 week ago fueling headlines about Sonny Bill Williams and his behaviour.
It has often been rumoured that Danny Weidler has a relative or powerful ally inside Channel 9 – as the previously unknown junior reporter was an average Rugby Union journo before coming from no where to be the so called ‘mr mail’ on all things Rugby League – getting his start on Channel 9 and having his profile regularly thrust upon viewers.
Sonny Bill Williams remains quiet after the recent saga with freelance photographer Bill Fidget and has agreed to pay for the damage to Fidget’s $15,000 camera.
Sonny Bill Williams Pictures (Hugos Kings X Saga)
July 27, 2007
The fall-out from the Sonny Bill Pictures taken in Kings Cross as he left nitespot Hugo’s by freelance photographer Billy Fidget continues today with Bulldog CEO Malcolm Noad facing the media.
Noad has claimed the freelance photographer – Billy Fidget rang the club after the incident and asked the to buy the photos he took of Sonny Bill Williams in Kings Cross – or he would sell them to the highest bidder.
The Bulldogs are claiming blackmail and turned Fidget down. Apparently Sonny Bill Williams broke the $15,000 camera of Fidgets in the scuffle and is reported to be paying for the damage.
Reports suggest News Limited purchased the photos / pictures of Sonny Bill Williams from the Hugo’s Niteclub Kings Cross incident for the sum of $5000.
(Word has it that these photos have also reached the internet and merely show Sonny Bill Williams sending a rude gesture the way of Bill Fidget)
SBW over-rated in poll?
July 26, 2007
The Daily Telegraph today released an NRL poll – where Sonny Bill Williams came in 3rd as the current most over-rated player.
Coming in first place was Braith Anasta and second was former UK super league star Jamie Lyon – now playing with Manly in the NRL once more.
In other news from the poll, The Bulldogs and The Parramatta Eels are the most followed team in the NRL. It was widely believed the Eels and Bulldogs have the most fans, now it is backed up with some stats.
Eel Nathan Hindmarsh was voted the toughest player in the NRL within the survey also.
SBW considers walking away
July 25, 2007
The pressure continues to take its toll on Sonny Bill Williams; as injured Bulldogs teammate Willie Mason commented to the media about the strain on SBW.
Mason said “The pressure on Sonny is taking a huge toll, we fear that Sonny may walk away from Rugby League much sooner than he should – purely to escape the media attention and spotlight”
It would be sad to see Kiwi and Australian Rugby League and the NRL competition lose such an exciting and talented representative. (While there is plenty of Kiwi and Australian rivalry – I am sure both sides of the Tasman would want to keep seeing Sonny Bill Williams in action)
While it seems Sonny Bill Williams has refrained from drinking alcohol in order to prevent any mishaps, he possibly should take the advice given to most top ranking NRL celebrities – that is to take a short flight to Melbourne or Adelaide where there is little if any public NRL support.
It seems so simple, yet most NRL players are unwilling to undertake the short 50 minute flight at $200 return cash to a state where they can enjoy total freedom from the spotlight for 24 hours whenever they want. It might be advice that Sonny and his management can take on board.
Here is a short video of Sonny – gee it would be a shame to lose SBW from the NRL. (Just look at what he can do in these highlights from NRL games)
SBW – Danny Weidler Fallout
July 24, 2007
Danny Weidler of Channel 9 fame was the man who broke the story to television audiences – regarding Sonny Bill Williams and his altercation with a photographer in Kings Cross on Saturday night.
It now seems the already strained relations between the Bulldogs, Sonny Bill and Danny Weidler continue to turn sour.
Danny Weidler was already banned from Bulldogs facilities moving forward and the man NRL players call ‘Ronald McDonald’ may find it hard to continue breaking stories as the NRL looks at him angrily.
Sonny Bill Williams feels this most recent incident was purely a minor scuffle – however with Weidler pouncing it has again thrust Sonny Bill well and truly into the media spotlight.
A modest, quiet man – Sonny Bill Williams must be longing to be out of the spot and just be able to spend some time peacefully with girlfriend Gemma Shaw.

Sonny Bill Williams & Photographer Saga
July 23, 2007
SBW is in the headlines again today, this time after allegedly lashing out at a photographer near an inner city nightclub. The Bulldogs are now investigating reports that Sonny Bill Williams and a photographer came to blows, after several reports of punches between Sonny Bill and the Paparazzi man.
Channel Nine TV on Monday reported Sonny Bill Williams took exception to the paparazzi photographer taking his picture as he exited Hugo’s Lounge in Kings Cross on Saturday night.
It is believed the photographer did not listen to Williams’s request for him to stop taking photos, at which point the New Zealand forward allegedly smashed the camera from his hands, causing significant damage to the equipment.
A Bulldogs official said the club was investigating the altercation but declined to comment any further, while the NRL said it had no knowledge of the incident at this stage.
Off-Field Success for Sonny Bill
July 22, 2007
Fresh from the win over the Gold Coast Titans in Queensland, Sonny Bill Williams continues to keep his nose to the grindstone. His personal form and that of the Bulldogs in the past few weeks has been nothing short of stunning.
For Sonny Bill Williams, he has kept will clear of the media spotlight and this is surely helping him focus on the game of NRL he plays each week.
Not only has SBW kept a clean sheet off the field recently, his injury worries in NRL 2007 have been fairly few and far between. Fortunately SBW has kept himself fit and on the field – something that hasn’t occurred in recent years.
Sonny Bill Williams Kills Titans
July 20, 2007
The fierce shoulder of SBW was back in force tonight, as Sonny attacked the Gold Coast Titans with ferocious enthusiasm.

Sonny was motivating his team mates with the punishing early defence, but as the game wore on he began to run hard at the Titans defence line – requiring 3 and sometimes 4 tacklers to stop him and he regularly got his big arm free to find Renu Maitua and co in support.
Luke Patten bagging a double, as did Darryl Millard out wide.
Sonny Bill Williams narrowly missing the man of the match award, with mate Reni Maitua taking the honours.
Coach Steve Folkes will want SBW to keep lifting his form, hoping that Sonny Bill can retain his current level when Mark O’Meley and Willie Mason return.
SBW Leadership Role Tonight
July 19, 2007
Sonny Bill Williams will again take on the role of Bulldogs leader and enforcer as the Dogs face the Titans on the Gold Coast.
With Willie Mason and Mark O’Meley missing, SBW will be called upon to make the hard yards and set the foundation for the young Bulldogs side. Leading team mates such as new boy Fred Briggs and growing star Chris Armit – the Titans will have to watch Sonny closely at all times.
It’s a crunch game for both the Bulldogs and Titans, with the NRL Top 8 finals series only weeks away.
We’ll be back with a report on Sonny Bill Williams and the Bulldogs / Titans match shortly.
